Be The Parent You Want To Be

Daily child-rearing can be a constant battle full of highs and lows. By reading this article, you can make it become one of the best journeys you will ever take. Peruse each tip, and choose the ones that may be the most helpful to you.

When traveling with a small child, try to keep the same bedtime and mealtime routines as you have at home. Travel is stressful for small children, especially infants. To assist your child in feeling comfortable while traveling and ensure that all members of your party get a good night’s sleep, be sure to observe established bedtime rituals.

Going from one activity to another can be difficult for very small children. Switching abruptly from one task to another can often be very stressful and result in melt-downs.

Infants and toddlers should not consume soda, diet or otherwise. Have them drink either water, milk, or sugar-free juice. All of these drinks lack the harmful acids in soda and contain vitamins and minerals a growing child needs.

Every child has his or her own unique character. A parenting technique that worked perfectly on an older child may be useless with his or her younger sibling. Rewards and punishments will need to be examined. Even so, keep track of what methods have worked well for you.

If you child is teething, chill some pickles, cucumbers or carrots and let your child gnaw on them using a mesh teether. The taste of the food inside of the teether will keep your child using this teether longer than other types of relief. Encourage them to chew for as long as they desire, and the longer this is, the better their mood should be.

Bring things that are familiar and comforting with your toddler or young child when traveling. Your child may become distressed if you take them somewhere new. Bringing a favorite item can help children experience a degree of continuity and stability when they adjust to new environments.

Children naturally seek independence. By assign chores to your children they will gain confidence. For example, if you are washing dishes, allow your child to dry them. For example, while folding your clean laundry, enlist your child’s help to sort socks. Small tasks help them to feel like they are autonomous while also helping you.

When traveling with small children, it will be easier to get through the security process if you use the line designated specifically for families. Many airports now have these. This way, you will not upset impatient travelers since going through the security line with kids takes a bit longer then normal. Don’t forget that everything, including shoes, must be run through an x-ray.

It is important that you get your child to participate in after-school activities, such as sports. These encourage your child to become more social and make more friends, which can help your child all the way through adulthood. More importantly, with their being occupied with these activities, they will then have less time to get involved with negative ones.

Encouraging your child to play team sports will help build their self-esteem. You can attend games to support and encourage your child; doing so creates memories and attributes that last your child’s life.

Do not keep junk food in the house. Keeping these items out of the house, and thus out of your child’s mind, will make it less likely for them to want the unhealthy foods. These items should be kept as special occasion treats, such as for Christmas or Halloween.

You must come to terms with the fact that not every child will be social and outgoing. Some children can be shy and withdrawn, and that is normal behavior for them. Pay attention to whether your child becomes extremely withdrawn. If the behavior begins to appear strange, take your child to the doctor for a consultation.

Bad Behavior

Good parents make the time to praise good behavior from their children. Kids need attention. If parents do not acknowledge a child’s good behaviors, the child will seek their attention with bad behavior. By neglecting to give their kids attention for good behavior, parents are encouraging their kids to act up with bad behavior.

When potty training a toddler, have him sit on the toilet or potty regularly. The reason for this is that toddlers are usually still in that stage where they are learning to communicate. You may not realize they have to go until it is too late. To cut down on accidents, walk your child to his “potty” consistently, about every two hours. This should help your child remember.

If your child hates the taste of medicine, try disguising the taste with something sweet. Orange juice cuts the taste of the medicine quite nicely, but you can just add some sugar to it as an alternative. Have your child close his eyes when you need to give him eye drops, and let the drops fall onto his eyelid. This will allow the medicine to enter the eye more gently than if dropped while the eye is open.
