It doesn’t matter how good of a parent you think you are, there are always things you can learn towards becoming a better parent. The tips and suggestions found here can show you how to deal with today’s issues with raising kids.
Be honest when talking to your child, and be honest when they are around you. Your kids need to know that you are trustworthy.
All you need is a clear kitchen counter and a rolled-up towel. Put the towel on the counter and put your child on it so that his head is under the sink faucet. Then turn on the faucet to run water over his hair. If your child is afraid of having their head underwater, or does not like water poured directly on their head, this will making washing their hair much less stressful for everyone.
Build some time away from your kids into your schedule. Even if you can only manage to find a babysitter for a couple of hours or have to ask a family member, the break will do you good. If parents never get a timeout from child-rearing responsibilities, stress and frustration can result. This will affect the entire family.
If you have kids living in your home, you should never smoke inside the dwelling. Actually, it would be extremely helpful to kick the habit altogether. Secondhand smoke affects health just as much as firsthand. Exposure to second-hand smoke puts children at higher risk for respiratory conditions like pneumonia, asthma or bronchitis.
Creating family rules using clear and positive words can reduce fighting and encourage cooperation. Rather than saying “no hitting,” for instance, tell children to “touch gently.”
Toddlers have short attention spans, and are easily amused, so switching up the toys in their toy boxes can help to keep them amused with the same old toys. Your toddler probably won’t even notice their toys are missing, unless of course it is their favorite one! By regularly rotating toys, you ensure that your child is always stimulated and interested by every object. It also eliminates the urge to constantly buy toys on every shopping trip.
As an adoptive parent, you should expect to answer certain questions as your child grows. It’s natural for adopted children to wonder about their biological families, and they may pepper you with questions down the road. Never hide the truth about their biological parents. This will help to avoid resentment or anger later on if they find the truth out for themselves.
Having your child partake in extracurricular activities like sports is important. They encourage children to be social and make friends. These skills are desperately needed throughout life, and developing them when they are young is best. These activities can also keep children away from drugs, gangs, and other undesirable behaviors.
Your children will build self-esteem if they play team sports, so encourage them to try. Going to your child’s games will be a great occasion for bonding and will show your child you care about their passion.
Keep in mind that some children are more reserved than others. There are many children who are much more introverted, which is perfectly acceptable. There are times when children are extremely withdrawn and, should this be true of your child, it should garner your attention. If you are concerned that your child may be too withdrawn, it may be a good idea to have them seen by a doctor to rule out any medial/psychological issues that may be present.
Stick to a schedule when you are getting your child ready for bed. By following these nighttime routines, your child will be prepared for the sleeping time that is ahead. When your child finishes brushing his teeth, changes into his bedtime clothes, and listens to one of his favorite bedtime stories, he will know that sleeping comes next. Your child will quickly get used to this routine and will not contest it.
Give your baby a massage with lavender scented lotion to calm him. The smell of the lavender should help your child to calm down instantly. Lavender oil can also be used to help a child fall to sleep when nap time arrives because the oil is very calming.
Before administering medicine to your child, it may be helpful to mix each dose in something sweet. You can hide it in the child’s favorite juice, or just stir some sugar directly into the medicine. When applying eye drops it is a good idea to apply the drops to your child’s closed eyelid rather than fighting to try to keep their eye open. Once the eyes are opened, the eye drop will slide straight into place.
Children should know that life can sometimes be difficult and the trials should be met head on. Your child can learn how to better handle challenges by watching you and your spouse resolve your own. Being aware that problems can arise also eases your child into understanding the realities of life.
Working on your child-rearing skills goes to show how much you care about your children. Taking the advice here will give you a confidence boost to get better at it. Your parenting know-how can always use a little extra boost.
