Prenatal Yoga Classes

Caring for yourself and your child is essential during your pregnancy. Experts recommend adopting certain dietary habits while pregnant to ensure the developing fetus is getting the right nutrients and minerals, exercising right (talk to your doctor regarding which are right for you) to stay healthy while pregnant and seeing your doctor for regular checkups throughout pregnancy. Yoga is an activity that many have found helpful in promoting health and well-being throughout pregnancy.

For one, stress during pregnancy is not uncommon, as many women feel stretched thing during pregnancy as they deal with their body’s changes. Yoga is often helpful in reducing stress for many women and some doctors may even recommend stress-reducing activities such as yoga while pregnant. It is important, however, to understand that there are different types of yoga and some may not be appropriate for pregnant women.

For instance, Bikram Yoga, which may also be called ‘hot yoga’, is performed in a room that may be heated to over 100 degrees F. Many doctors and experts recommend that pregnant women avoid this type of yoga as exercising in the hot temperatures may endanger the health of the fetus some reports and studies indicate.

Restorative yoga, on the other hand, may be helpful for women who are pregnant. This type of yoga uses props such as pillows, blankets, sandbags, walls, chairs, etc. to position the body in certain poses, allowing the body to rest and renew. This type of yoga triggers the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which is responsible for helping the body’s response system restore equilibrium and helps balancing the body.

Prenatal yoga classes are available at many fertility clinics to help women stay limber and tone muscles during pregnancy. Practicing yoga while pregnant may also have a positive impact on circulation and balance. Because props are used to position the body in certain poses, there is little to no impact on the joints and the individual may simply relax, relieving stress and promoting overall well-being.

What’s more, prenatal yoga classes will be full of women who are pregnant. Many of these women may be experiencing things similar to what you’re experiencing and may be a great forum for discussing things that are on your mind. Of course, women should follow advice of their doctor, but restorative yoga may be a great way to relax, improve mental and physical health and network with other pregnant women.
